4 Webinar Basics and Benefits
by: Joseph Tropper, MS, LCPC, Senior Presenter
Did you know that the New York Boards of Social Work and Mental Health Counseling as well as the Maryland Board of Social Work and Professional Counselors and Therapists acknowledge live interactive webinar trainings as if you are there in-person. That means that you can take a live interactive webinar from the comfort of your own home and get Category A or Category 1 credits for doing so! Now that’s awesome!
Here is a list of 4 Basics and Benefits to keep in mind when signing up for a webinar.
1- Convenience: Attending a live webinar for your CEUs is so much fun. You pick your own location. AS long as you have a working internet connection, you can join the training from your home, work or even when out of town on a Hawaiian vacation (who would want to take a webinar when on vacation?!). You don’t have to worry about traffic, parking or getting there early. Therapists reported that they were reluctant to take a webinar, but after they tried it once, many of them found it to be very enjoyable and simple. Of course, there are still many who prefer to take trainings live and in person and that is very reasonable as well. Our advice is to give it a try once and see how it goes for you!
2- Prepare Ahead: Make sure you have the correct webinar link to join, the start time, a working internet connection, a quiet place where you won’t be disturbed. If there are handouts, you can often print them out ahead of time or as soon as you log on.
3- Engage: Webinar platforms have places for you to type, speak or even digitally vote when you are polled or have something to say. Just because you are not in the physical room with the presenter, doesn’t mean you should lose out from speaking up. When you are online, don’t be afraid to speak up and share your mind.
4- Completion Certificate: Make sure that you complete any requested evaluation forms as quickly as possible and return them so that you can secure your completion certificate for your records. We always recommend keeping a thorough list of all CEUs that you attended including date, title, credit hours and type A/1 or B/2. Any questions about requirements should be directed to your state board.
Webinars are a great way to catch some or all of your CEUs. They can give you flexibility andpeace of mind, while delivering access to great content that you may have not otherwise been able to learn. Give it a try and see for yourself. Always check in with the licensing board of your state and discipline to ensure that the training will provide you with the credits that you need.
